DISTINCTIONS AWARD

Nikolaos Mourgkogiannis, a PhD Candidate, from the Department of Chemistry, of University of Patras and a member of Food Innovation RI research team awarded the 1st place in Poster and Orals Competition of 5th Workshop of Graduates and Post-docs in Chemical Engineering Sciences, 2019, for his work “Physical and chemical properties of biochar produced by pyrolysis of biomass”.

Abstract.
For biochars produced from raw spent coffee grains (SCG), rice husks (RH), and grapes seeds (GS)the following parameters were determined: specific surface area, suspension pH, microporosity, ash content, functional groups (only for SCG). The raw SCG had a low ash content (1.7%) and pH (5.5) compared to raw RH (ash: 18% and pH6.0). On the other hand, the ash content of biochar RH is higher (61%) than the ash of GS (6.9%). Furthermore, the highest surface area of activated SCG were observed for the activated SCG with H3PO4 (921 m2/g) compare to activated SCG with NaOH (876 m2/g).
